Liquid nitrogen is one of the most fun things to play around with, if you’re careful of course! I think the reason for this is that it allows you to show off so many different areas of physics, simply by changing the temperature. That’s why it’s great for live shows and demonstrations, it means I can explain a lot of physics to people in ways that are exciting, like sticking my hand in it for example.
When it comes to research, it is very much another tool that we use, normally to cool down large bits of equipment. In this sense it’s not really any more fun to use than anything else.
